Importance Of Vaccinating Your Pets
All of our pets are susceptible to a variety of infectious diseases. Fortunately, we have cat and dog vaccinations that help protect them against most of these diseases. While cases of some of these conditions may be rare, it is still important to ensure your pets are vaccinated. Unlike immunizations in people, it is essential to have your pet vaccinated annually, as some of the vaccines only provide one year of immunity or coverage. Keep in mind that if you are late for your booster vaccination, you may have to restart the series all over again to ensure adequate protection. Puppy And Dog Vaccinations
Protech C4 – The vaccination covers distemper, a viral disease which can lead to severe respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological disease and even death. In addition, it covers two forms of hepatitis (adenovirus Type 1 &2 ) that can lead to liver disease. Parvovirus is a well-known virus that can affect dogs of all ages, leading to serious damage to the white blood cells and causing severe vomiting and diarrhea, even death. Young puppies are the most susceptible, but it can affect dogs of all ages. Finally, parainfluenza is a respiratory virus that can lead to an upper respiratory infection. Bronchi-Shield Oral – This vaccination covers Bordetella. otherwise known as ‘Kennel cough’ or Canine Respiratory Syndrome (CRS). You may notice that this vaccination is given as a liquid into the mouth, as opposed to a ‘shot.’ That is because immunity to Bordetella is achieved by stimulating local immunity and therefore protection is provided at the site of infection right where it is needed most.
Dog Vaccination Protocol
- 6-8 weeks- Protech C4
- 10-12 weeks – Protech C4 and Bronchi-Shield Oral
- 14-16 weeks – Protech C4
- First annual visit – Protech C4 and Bronchi-Shield Oral
Kitten And Cat Vaccinations
Fel-O-Vax 3 – This viral vaccination, protects your cat against several viruses leading to upper respiratory tract infections (rhinotracheitis and calicivirus), along with panleukapenia, a virus which can wipe out a kitten’s immune system, much like parvovirus in dogs. It is given in a series as a kitten, then annually. Fel-O-Vax FIV – Vaccination for feline immunodeficiency virus is important for any cat that may have or could potentially have contact with feral cats or those with unknown vaccine history. If there is any chance your feline could venture outside, then vaccination for FIV is a must. A three shot series is given as a kitten, then annually thereafter. If your feline friend has been outside unprotected a FIV test is recommended prior to vaccination.
Feline Vaccination Protocol
- 8 weeks: Fel-O-Vax 3 and Fel-O-Vax FIV*
- 10 weeks: Fel-O-Vax FIV*
- 12 weeks: Fel-O-Vax 3 and Fel-O-Vax FIV*
- First annual visit – Fel-O-Vax 3 and Fel-O-Vax FIV*
